Go Tech Free for 1 Day

1986. What was the world like thirty years ago? Well, let’s take a look:

A gallon of gas cost $0.89.

Average price of a new car was only $9,255.

Fox Broadcasting Company launched.

Ronald Reagan was President.

The Chicago Bears won Super Bowl XX over the New England Patriots.

Top Gun was the number one movie.

Cheers was the most popular TV show airing.

Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” was a Billboard number one hit.

Internet had not been invented.

One family in Canada took this blast from the past very seriously. For one year, the Guelphs and their two children decided to revert their lifestyles to involve only products that were available in 1986. They didn’t use fancy coffee machines, a computer, an online bank account, or (most importantly) – smartphones. Yep, that’s right.

The Guelphs started this entire plan because their children (then ages 5 and 2) would never look up from their iPhones and iPads. In an interview, the family said that they are instead reading, playing outside, and connecting with people in person only (aside from the occasional fax). The Guelphs lived this way for an entire year, and never slipped up.

So, maybe this lifestyle change is a little drastic, but if the Guelphs saw the benefits of a tech free and retro lifestyle, you can, too!
